Detachment Photo circa 1972
When the Detachment was disbanded in 1992 under options for change, the members voted
to form a branch of the Association.
Though the detachment had few officers, the OR’s supplied the unit with a fair mix of class 1
tradesman, from CMT’s to Lab Techs, OTTs, Pharmacy Techs and chefs. The retention rate
was very good with about 50% of the personnel being awarded the Efficiency Medal.
Originally the Detachment occupied Gibraltar Block in the old MOD compound at Queen Street,
Dunoon. The compound was shared with the US Navy Commissary and PX. This building had
been hastily built in 1940/41 to accommodate Royal Navy personnel and by the 1970’s was
beginning to show it’s age. Rising maintenance costs and cramped accommodation led to
A new TA Centre being built on the Sandbank Industrial Estate which accommodated both the
RAMC Detachment, a platoon from 7th Bn A & SH and the local ACF/ATC detachments.
As weapons were held on site, the infantry became the lead unit with ‘205’ the major unit,
providing catering services and bar facilities.
An agreement with 6 Royal Scots has led to the Branch being able to hold the Annual Reunion
in the TAC and members being able rekindle old memories in once familiar surroundings.
